Thank God Its Friday!

This has been one of the worst work-weeks in my life!

Went blank at a status meeting, the new tool for which I had to give presentation suddenly stopped working – right in the middle of the presentation! – So I lost the structure and was told to correct it! And finally flunked a test today – by just 2 wrong answers :”-( *boohoooo* But I really didn’t have time to study for it… (that’s my only consolation) but am damn embarrassed to face anyone right now. Looking forward for the end of the day today and the weekend.

Praying that this will be the end of all bad things for a Long time to come!

Lethargy!

I’ve always been known to put things off… I always start something with full enthusiasm – spend loads of money on buying the best stuff, work on it for 2 days and then *poof* all that enthu and all that josh just vanishes.

Today morning I noticed my glass painting lying there in 2 weeks of dust – untouched 😦 Have another couple of hours to complete it but I am just not able to move my butt to sit in front of it and complete it. Now hubby is adamant I finish this one too before we give the other one for frame – he wants to give both of them together and get matching frames and he’s so stubborn that he’s refused to even get me the next on my wish list – a quick stitch kit *boohooo*

And now he’s been telling me that I will soon start getting lazy about blogging too. And it just hit me that I haven’t written in the past 5 days! So decided to post something and prove him wrong! 🙂 Also – currently I’m enjoying blogging soo much that I don’t think I’m gonna stop very soon!

*Sigh* I guess I better get to it sooner than later…

Columbus Memoirs

I’ve realised that I cant stop bugging people (anyone who would care to listen) about our stay in Columbus/adventures in US (hehe nice way to put it). Anything and everything that comes to my mind – I go on and on. Suddenly at lunch time today I realised that I need to stop doing that – else people might just stop talking to me! Am now wondering how many people have thought that I’m smitten by the US of A! :-O

Its that I have such really good memories of the place and the people that I cant stop thinking wistfully – what if we hadnt come back? How much more fun would we have had, how many more new friends would we have made, how many more new places we would have seen…

So beginning today – i’m going to start writing all those memories of 8 months in USA -not just Columbus, here, rather than biting someone’s ears off!

Also on second thoughts – wouldnt it be a great place to put it all – so that its a diary of sorts and I can revisit it whenever….And all those people featured in these memories can also get to read it!

So watch out for more stories here… 🙂

Valentine’s Day – Of Hype and Mushy Romance

OK – finally after reading for nearly 2 weeks about all the sale/special offers and blatant advertising from the various retailers to gift your loved one anything from a red rose to diamonds to ipods and mobiles – the day is now over!

I was tired of seeing pages and pages of pink/red heart advertisements everywhere for the past 2 weeks! 2 weeks? Its like hitting a person and saying – hey! u NEED to gift something to your loved one to show that u love him/her – and this time red roses/candle light dinners and greeting cards were a strict no no! Thats so passe’ – you need to cook/take them out for a holiday/buy the latest gizmo and for her – a diamond! Pleaaassseeee! Is that all love is? The costlier your gift – more love you have? And what if one doesnt know to cook?!! God Forbid! If I burn that special dish – does it mean I dont love hubby?!

I noticed that the florist near home had 3 bucket full of red roses which by the time I got back home – none were left. I saw a couple of girls in the office carrying bunches of red roses and gift wrapped packs which did make me smile …

I do like the concept of wishing your loved one on valentine’s day – how many times in a year would you express your love/heartfelt appreciation to your loved one – just for being there in your life? And I am a die-hard romantic myself. I love those pictures of couples in cards/photo frames… Hubby keeps saying that i’m in love with ‘Love’ itself :-p (What ever that means!) I find romantic scenes even in action movies – Now, how many people can give me one romantic scene in movies like Company and Guru?

Some of my personal favourites :

1. Mera Saaya movie – Sadhana and Sunil Dutt – Wondering “Hey! But thats a murder mystery!” – But has anyone seen that scene when she wakes him up and says she’s going to the temple? Or the scene when he gets her ‘mangalsutra’ repaired? Oh! Every scene that has the 2 of them? Thats the kind of love I always wanted between me and hubby -much before I even met him 🙂 I’ve watched that movie soo many times that I can close my eyes and see those scenes all over again…

2. Movie Aandhi – Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen – All those scenes in flashback… Few scenes in Maine pyar kiya, hum aapke hai kaun (ever noticed the romance between Monish Bhel and Rennuka Sahane?)

3. The scene in company – 2 actually – Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala – when she notices that its raining? (it hardly lasts for a few seconds actually) and one of Vivek Oberoi and Antara maali – that rain song?

4. Tum se milke – song from Parinda, Aate jaate from Maine pyar kiya, Ofcourse I HAVE to mention – ‘Jab koi baath bigad jaaye’ which has sort of become ‘our song’ today…

There was a time when ‘Dheere dheera machal ye dile bekaraar’ from Mamta (I think) which held a lot of meaning 🙂

5. Some english like “Where ever you go what ever you do” by Richard Marx and ‘ And I will always love you’ by Whitney Houston and “Everything I do” by Bryan Adams. Oh Yeah! Nothing to beat Kenny G’s saxophone – truely romantic…

Last but not the least – Ever heard ‘tunturu alli neera haadu’? kannada movie -‘Amruthavarshini’ beautifully sung by Chitra, superb photography, sweet picturisation – I love everything about this song. Simple and best.

I cant recall anymore right now – but I find such small gestures and looks that most people dont notice – even within family/friends. Later when I mention them to hubby – he’s like – ‘hey! but how do u notice such things? I hardly ever notice even things that are in plain view!”

Guess I’m in love with ‘Love’ 🙂 And try to find it in everyday mundane life…

PS:I didnt attempt to cook anything that day :-)Lest he thinks I dont love him!:-P

The Herd Mentality

Saturday night at Transit in Forum- All counters are full and overflowing with people. Hubby went to get something to eat for us and though he’s standing in the queue for 10 mins he never got to the counter as people didn’t bother about the queue and went to the counter directly causing a lot of confusion. Everyone wanted to be served first – and their orders taken first. Finally hubby had to tell someone to follow the queue. The guy said – ” Ok boss! I didn’t know there was a queue – don’t get angry!” – What are all those people standing behind one another, fools? Cant he even recognize a queue? Its just that he didn’t want to stand in that queue -he wanted to get his order in first – 2 hoots to those people who want to follow some kind of order!

This reminded me of another incident almost an year back – at the Bombay International Airport. There were a lot of people traveling in that Air India flight at 8 am in the morning. I finished all formalities almost an hour early and decided to close my eyes for a while, waiting for the announcement for boarding. 10 mins later I open my eyes to see that there are people sitting at the boarding gate on the floor! There were plenty of seats for all those people to sit comfortably till the boarding call and there was still 45 mins! All the others who finished their security checks – joined that crowd of people sitting on the floor at the gate- hello! Cant you see that there are enough chairs for everyone? Why sit on the floor? And its not like, its some bus stop/train station where as soon as the bus/train comes you have to rush to catch a seat else you will have to travel standing! Everyone has a seat and they know where they need to sit – then why sit at the gate like you would sit on a platform in a bus stand/train station? And yeah -as expected as soon as the gates opened everyone just rushed! Nobody bothered if they were calling for old/disabled people or for travelers with children – everyone wanted to go first! finally the guards at the gate gave up and just let everyone rush! It was total Chaos…

And the Irony is – When we landed in Frankfurt for refueling – we were all herded out into an enclosure where we had to wait for an hour – and when the call came for boarding again – the same people waited until their seat numbers were called – not just waited for the old/disabled – amazing! and disgusting – why couldn’t they follow the same thing back in Bombay( Mumbai)? Why as soon as they come back to our country they start behaving so uncouth and the minute they step out of the country they know all their manners? What is it that makes them disregard others here when they go all out of their way to please others, somewhere else? Why is it that common sense completely becomes uncommon in our own land where as everyone’s in their best behavior outside? Or should I be happy that atleast they don’t behave like that outside the country lest the other Indians get embarrassed? I don’t really understand this behavior at all…

Our National Anthem

I remember when we were kids and went to watch any movie at the theatre (Which were very few and far between) they used to play the National Anthem at the end of the movie. But after a time they stopped it since the crowd- once the movie was over, just walked off from the hall not waiting to stand and pay respect to our National Anthem.

Recently we went to watch the kannada movie ‘GaaLipata’in a fairly new theatre. We went right on time (which rarely ever happens) and as we were settling down the following message came on screen ‘Please stand up for the National Anthem’.I admit I was pretty surprised – generally,we only get to see some advertisements or trailers before the movie begins. But I was glad that everyone at the theatre stood up.Some with popcorn/pepsi in hand too.

The video was about our Indian soldiers at the Siachen border in freezing cold and snow. There is one shot that really got to me – Heavy, bone chilling winds with snow thats blowing so hard that its almost knocking the Indian flag down. But there stood 1 soldier who was using his entire body to support the flag post and prevent it from falling and trying to hold it upright.I really had goose flesh on my arms seeing that.

I do and have stood up everytime I hear our National Anthem – thanks to an ingrained habit since school where we had all those Independence Day and Republic day celebrations and years of being in the school band set.

And I have a lot of respect to those great men/women leave their families and be prepared to bearthe harsh winters and desert summers to protect India’s borders.
My standing ovation to all those soldiers who fight for our country in inhumane conditions while we enjoy life in our cities.

Mera Bharath Mahan!

Faith Display

At lunch today I saw a lot of people with some gray/black mark on their foreheads and was wondering what all that was about. Then saw a collegue with the same mark too and asked her what it was – she said that its ash and its Ash Wednesday today – the beginning of Lent and a time for fasting until Easter.

But what struck me was that most of them had been to the church early in the morning to pray and get that ash on their foreheads by the Father and they had all come to office like that too.Without rubbing it off/washing it off or even tampering with it until it looked neat!

Something to learn from I guess – atleast for me – I dont like to carry any marks of my prayer (very few and far between anyways)with me to work -flowers/kumkum/bangles… Thinking I dont want to answer questions from people. I guess – it doesnt matter. Let them ask – I shall tell why… Time for me to
grow up and not be bothered about some offhanded comment on my faith in God.

(Hmm… me not very impressed with the title. Not able to think of anything better at the moment).
